Western States 100 Report by Bob Murphy

2005 WS100

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Ok, it wasn’t that dramatic, but I did have some super highs and some super lows. I felt really strong going up Emigrant Pass, but the ice took a lot of mental and physical energy to get through. I went down a couple of times and took a standing 8 once. I changed my style from slow and careful to reckless abandon. I didn’t want to go that fast, but I had better footing the quicker I moved on the ice. Going fast will take a toll later in the day. The highlight of the high country was when I lost my footing and slid down a steep hill without hitting the ground. I heard the guys behind me say, “wow, did you see that guy!” I wanted to turn around and taunt those wimps, but my heart was beating too fast.

Longer Training Runs and General Information

Over the next several weeks, the Saturday training runs will start to become longer. I talked with several people this past weekend at the Firecracker Race and I know there are runners who are interested in joining in on some of these weekly training runs. I want to encourage you to do so as it is a great way to learn the trails, make friends, have fun and get a great workout in.

Thanks to all the runners for driving out to Kaena Point this past Saturday. We had 59+ runners at the Kaena Point Firecracker 10 mile race.

A special Mahalo goes out to Joel and Steph for putting an awesome aide station at the turnaround.

I hope to get the results and photo's posted soon.

Remember, the next H.U.R.T. Trail Series Race is August 13th, the Maunawili to Waimanalo 22 mile race. This race starts and finishes at the Pali Lookout.

Participants may choose to do it as a two-person relay, with each runner doing one of the 11 mile legs. Relay runners need to arrange their own transportation to or from Waimanalo.

Volcano Lodging needed

Aloha !

A friend of mine from the mainland will be coming to do his first Volcano Marathon and needs a place to stay. His needs are very basic, either a room, shared room or a couch to lay his head will be fine, for Friday and Saturday nights (July 29 & 30).

Your help will be appreciated...just let me know.
