Kaena Point Firecracker Results and Photos

2010 Kaena Point Early Aloha Athletes,

Thank you for coming out to the Kaena Point Firecracker 10 mile trail race. I am pretty sure yesterday's weather was some of the coolest temperatures that we have ever had out there for our race and the mud may have been a first as well. Based on post-race conversations, it seems most everyone had a great time and the the food was pretty amazing for the post race potluck/picnic. Again, thank you for contributing.

I want to thank Joel (and Steph?) for setting up the aid station over on the Waianae side. They have been big supporters of our runners over the years and having this aid station is a big help for our race. P1010083

Thanks also goes out to Cheryl who biked out on the course and took the photos you can see here.

Thanks also goes out to John and PJ for making all of these trail races even available to us and for providing the overall results. Results can be seen here

Thanks also to my wife Barbi for all the baking and organizing she did for the race.

The next race in the HURT Trail Series is the run with pigs, I mean the Maunawili Out and Back 22 Mile & Relay. This is a very fun race with a unique format. The race starts at the Pali Lookout and is on August 14th. Put it on your calendar.

I hope you are out enjoying the rest of your Holiday weekend.  Aloha, Bob

One Last Reminder, HURT Trail Series Kaena Point Firecracker is Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 7:00 a.m.

July 4th Weekend: Lot's of Fun Things to Do: Kaena Point Firecracker, Sunday Long Training Run, Freedom Fest.

Aloha Athletes,  Images

We have the annual 4th of July festivities coming up this weekend and there are a lot of fun things to choose from.

Our own HURT Trail Series, the Kaena Point Firecracker 10 Mile race is Saturday July 3rd at 7:00 a.m. The race starts at the end of the paved road past Dillingham airfield and Camp Erdman. The route takes runners along the ocean and around the point on the Waianae side of the island of Oahu where the pavement begins again. This is the turn around as it is an out and back course. Don't forget to bring at least a water bottle and run with at least 20 oz of water. It can be a hot run on the way back.

As in all HURT Trail Series races there is no pre-registration. Please show up at least 30 minutes prior to the race start and the entry fee is just $10. We plan to have a 4th of July picnic/potluck after the race so bring a dish to share, a beach chair and your sunscreen.

There is more info including driving directions here

On Sunday, July 4th, Marian is planning another long run from Cheryl's house to the Nature Center and back. This is a 40++ mile run as Marian is training up to go run the Headlands 100 with her sister. The times listed below are just a guide and pretty good estimate of when they will be at certain points along the trail. You can certainly run any part of the run or all of it. Freddy has volunteered to have his truck be the Pali Lookout aid station. If you are going to run, please contact Marian so she has an idea of how many to plan for in regards to aid.

5:00 start at Cheryl's house
5:45 at Waimanalo trial head
8:15 at Pali lookout
9:30 at JAG
11:30 at Nature Center
1:30 at JAG
2:15 at Pali lookout
4:45 at Waimanalo trail head
5:30 finish at Cheryl's house

Looks like they will finish just in time to get down to Kailua Beach for the fireworks.  Images

Finally, this weekend on both Saturday and Sunday, Amy Bennett Eck is hosting her second annual Freedom Fest. It is a weekend of trail running, mountain biking, offroad triathlon and this year a couple of rough water swims have been added too. All of these events take place out at beautiful Kualoa Ranch. It may be difficult to top last years event when after planning and participating in all the events, Amy and Erik got married but if I know Amy, she will find some way to make this weekend just as much fun. More info is here.

Images  So, there is no reason to just sit around and watch the Tour on TV all weekend. Get out there and enjoy our island and celebrate our great country.

2010 Mango Madness Results (Updated)

Aloha Athletes,

Sounds like the Mango Madness run lived up to its name on Saturday, madness on the trails! Thanks to RD's Mike Muench and (late recruit) Julie Takishima for putting on the race.

Since I was down at Ala Moana Beach Park, I can't post a first hand report. Click here for the results (Updated)

Rob Lahoe's photos can be seen here

I hope to get more photos posted from Rex later today.

P.S. Remember the next trail series race is the Kaena Point Firecracker 10 Mile Race on July 3. More info will be posted later.

Check Your Name Spelling, Remember Your Number: HURT Trail Series DataBase

In an effort to improve timing of the HURT Trail Series and also to speed check-in prior to race start, we have created a database of Trail Series runner names.

Please open this document and check to see if your name is spelled correctly.

If so, do nothing. If your name is not spelled correctly, please e-mail John Salmonson at hurtpals at aol dot com and he will correct this before Saturday's Mango Madness race.

If you don't see your name on this list, please let us know too.

Mango Madness Trail Run

(A HURT Trail Series Run)

Saturday June 12, 2010,  7:00 AM Start

Water Tank Park @ Makiki Height Drive and Round Top Drive

$10 fee at Race Start (6:30 AM)

Marv here.

Just about recovered from that vicious pig attack of last year’s ribbon setting venture. It was a hard recovery as some of my best friends left me for dead out there on the trails.  What do you say when you go down, your guts spilling out, and all your running buddies are more worried  about not stepping is what’s left of your life as it forms orange puddles in the mud than getting you to place where you can at least serve up a good smoothie? Pretty hard on the ego.  But I’m back and better than ever, and I’m going to get even!

A great race is planned for next Saturday.

Lots of food and drinks!

Lots of prizes.

Lots of fun and laughs.

A great trail.

A good challenge.

Something for every one no matter what your ability!

Come prepared to be tested!

Come ready to have fun!

Expect no surprises this year.  It will be the standard 10+ mile race.  Straight start and straight finish.  A timed event, where the fast people get all the prizes and the bums get  the refreshment table leftovers. It will be the typical race, run by clocks and made for quantifiable lists for counting the minutes of the morning down to the last few seconds.

But it will be a challenge none the less.  Come Prepared to be Tested!

Directions:  H1 to Punahou (from the west) to Wilder (from east).  Punahou to Nehoa.

Left on Nehoa.  Nehoa to Makiki Street.  Right on Makiki Street.  Makiki Street to Makiki Heights Drive.  Left onto Makiki Heights Drive.  You are there.  (This is not difficult! No maps, no gps, no facebook needed.  (so don't ask.)

See you there!!   Marv

Important Update on Photos Posted from Stephane Lacasa

Apparently there has been some confusion over the photos and links posted for Stephane's photos.

Just like Rob Lahoe sent in a link for his photos on the photo service he used, Stephane did the same. I think this is a great way to link or post photos to our site. Typically this is faster and allows the photos to be set up in a slide show format. It saves time versus having the photographer transferring all the photos to a disk and mailing or delivering it to me and then I have to upload them to the site.

The difference in the service Rob used versus what Stephane used is that Stephane is a professional photographer and he normally sells his surf photos. It was never his intention to sell photos to runners.

Julie and Stephane were out on the course on Saturday after talking with Race Director Cheryl and helped direct runners, (well at least most runners-Rachael, Johnny?).

The function that charges for photos on Stephane's web site is an automatic function. He needs to override this. Stephane is at work during the day and he will change this and refund any purchases that have been made by runners. He apologizes for this inconvenience. Stephane did check and apparently some runners have downloaded photos and been charged so again this will be refunded. If you have any questions or want to order photos, please contact Stephane directly at [email protected]

Julie and Stephane were just trying to help out. I apologize for any confusion this has caused.

Run With A View Results and Photos

Aloha Athletes,

Don and Cheryl put on a fantastic run yesterday morning! They arranged a great turnout of runners, perfect cooling blessing of rain as we started up the hill and delicious grinds post race. We had a few runners who missed a turn or decided to add extra distance and dedicated a newly named turn, Rachel's Corner.

All in all it was a great day out on the trails. We also are trying a new timing method. It worked pretty good though we may not have everyone's name spelled correctly. If yours is incorrect, we apologize. This timing method is being further refined and we hope to make it even better.

Rob Lahoe has made some photos he took available here.

The next race in the HURT Trail Series, Mango Madness is on June 12!

H.U.R.T. Trail Series "Run with a View" Saturday May 8, 2010

Aloha Athletes,

RunWithAView The next race in the 2010 H.U.R.T. Trail Series is coming up this Saturday. The Run with A View race is 8 miles of fun.

Since we are starting in a neighborhood park, let's be good neighbors and keep it quiet during race arrivals and registration.

The race starts at the neighborhood park (on the left) at the corner of Kaahele St. and Naalii St., goes 1/2 mile up Kaahele St. to the trailhead and makes a 7 mile clockwise loop on trails before returning back down Kaahele St. to the park. It is 8 miles total. There will be one aid station at the 3.5 mile mark, so plan to bring a water bottle, as you may need it. The race starts at 7:00 am, so please be there to check in by 6:30 am with your $10 entry fee. There is no pre-registration.

Awards will be given to the first 10 men and to the first 10 women finishers and there will be soda, water, gatorade and some food at the finish. Fun for all ! We also have a limited supply of nice, new Patagonia/HURT Trail Series shirts for $20 each.

Driving directions: If you are coming from Honolulu, take H-1 freeway ewa direction to the Waimalu Exit. After taking the Waimalu Exit, immediately get into the left lane and prepare to stop at the traffic light. Take another left at the stop light, getting onto Moanalua Rd. (heading Diamondhead). Go to the 2nd traffic light, Kaahele St., and take a left (mauka). continue up Kaahele St. for quite a distance up the hill, until you reach the stop sign at Naalii Street. The neighborhood park is on the left and there is plenty of parking on Kaahele St.

ps, the address and description used in a previous posting with the photo of the pig is incorrect. Please forgive RD Rob, he tries to do these things while balancing a baby in one hand and functioning on little sleep.
