Aloha HURT Ohana!

Saturday, June 16 will be an opportunity for us to assist Na Ala Hele with the maintenence of the Maunawili trail and also prepare for the trail for hoards of people wanting to Run With the Pigs!  Na Ala Hele has generously agreed to work with us to make this work day happen.

What to bring:

  • Water
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Gloves
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Mosquito repellant
  • Tools such as; weedwhackers, hedge trimmers, machetes

The tenative plan is to meet at the Maunawili trailhead at 10 am.  We will load into State Vehicle(s) and be driven a couple of miles up the jeep road access (making the hike significantly shorter for access to the middle section).

If you are interested in helping out, please respond with a comment or email me at mnyasuda at hawaii dot rr dot com.  Indicate in your response the number of people and any tools that you might be able to provide.  If you are needing certification of trail work for a planned trail race, I will facilitate that certification.  Just provide your necessary form to me on the day of service and I will get it signed.

Let's take time to give back and celebrate National Trails Day . NTDart_2012

2012 "Run for George" Results

Aloha Athletes,

Photo-17Wow! What an amazing race today up on the N. shore. Close to 75 runners plus trail markers, marshals, timers, and other volunteers were up early to support George. Race Director and organizer extroidinare Steve Villiger put together a great event. He even pulled off an all night and early morning rain shower to get the course in perfect HURT conditions: wet & muddy.

Many runners had never run these trails before and for others it was maybe only their second time so everyone was loving the sweet, single track route. In true HURT Trail Series style there were great after race grinds.

Steve and others will probably post some photos later here and on Facebook so watch for those. The amazing thing about what Steve is doing is that he is not finished. Tomorrow he has organized a paddling, water-based event with the same goal of raising money for George. I am hoping once Steve is finished and can rest up a bit that he will share with us some of the details from what this weekend means for George.

Photo-18I think everyone who participated was happy to contribute and we all received something far greater in return.

Here are today's run results: 2012 "Run for George" Results

As in all HURT Trail Series races we try to do the best we can and get the results accurate. Occaisionally we make mistakes. Please forgive us.

Aloha, Bob

A Quick Mango Madness Announcement: T-Shirt Ordering Deadline

Aloha Athletes,

We are fortunate to have amongst us a new Trail Series Co-Race Director who is also an amazing graphic designer, Melanie Decker Koehl. She had asked me to post this a while back but we held out until the race got a bit closer and not to distract from this weekend's amazing "Run for George."

However the deadline to order is Monday, May 28th to get your shirt in time to be available race day, June 9th.   The shirts will not be available for sale at the race!

Get a shirt for the 4th race in the H.U.R.T. Trail Series: Mango Madness! These white dry-fit t-shirts run a bit small, so order up. Designed by Melanie Decker Design, printed by Tai Blechta of TaiGraphix. $15!

Link to buy a t-shirt:

IMPORTANT: Enter coupon code MANGO at checkout for free shipping. Shirts will be at the race for pick-up.

This race is going to be a blast! 10+ Miles always means a special detour thrown in when you least expect it. So expect it!

(If you already have a "Run with the Pigs 2011" shirt, it is the same style, fit)

There will be a practice or training run scheduled for Saturday, June 2!.

Aloha, Bob

The HURT Run For George is this weekend!

HURT Run For George

It's the final count down.  The HURT Run For George World Championship is this Saturday, May 26.  Start time is 7:00 AM at the Sunset Beach Elementary School.  Please arrive by 6:30 for registration and race briefing.

Remember, this event has no entry fee.  It is donation only.  100% of all donations will go directly to our buddy George Ramos who is battling cancer, to help with his medical expenses.  We suggest a $10 donation, but more is better and less is OK.

This is a fast and fun course.  We're expecting a BIG turn out, so get ready to have some fun!

Trophies for the top three men and top three women!  Limited edition tee shirts for the first 50 finishers!! Plus other fun prizes!

Pot Luck at the finish so bring a dish or just bring your appetite.

The trails are in impeccable shape, not a pine needle out of place!

Please park in the lower school parking lot, or on Kam Hwy, or at Ehukai Beach Park directly across the street.  Please DO NOT park in the upper parking lot as there will be a farmers market there and we don't want to ruffle any feathers.

There will  be an aid station (water only) at Lilikoi Junction, but we still recommend carrying your own water.  You will pass Lilikoi Junction twice, first at around 4.5 miles and then again at around 7 miles.  There will be ripe strawberry guavas growing along the course that are delicious!

Please tell all your friends, we really want to have a big turn out for this special event!

There will be a "walking option", which will be a two mile out and back course.  Walkers will not be timed.

Run For George course preview

Want to check out the "Run For George" course?  There will be a group of us meeting at the Sunset Beach Elementary School this Saturday, 5/19 at 7 AM.  We will be running the soon-to-be-famous "Run For George" loop.  It's an awesome single track course that's mostly in the shade, with awesome views of the North Shore surf breaks.  The course is just over 8.5 miles, so if you want, you can run it twice (or three times if you really want).  Cruise pace...probably take us about 2 hours to complete the course.  Plenty of time left in the day to get in some paddling too.  Because, remember, the Paddle For George is the day after the  Run For George.  It's going to be a George-apalooza weekend!  There are a number of us who will be participating in both events.  Many of us have completed biathalons and triathalons, but this is your first opportunity to participate in a George-apalooza-thon!

Run For George Trail Race

OK, here's the 411 on the Run For George...

RunForGEORGEjpg

This race is going to be super fun!  There is NO entry fee.  It will be DONATION ONLY.  100% of all donations will go directly to George to help with his medical expenses.  We would suggest $10, but more is better and less is OK.  Just come out and show your support for George.  Bring your friends, even if they're not runners, because there will be a "walking option".  Of course the "walking option" is not available to HURT runners!

Several people have inquired about making a donation even though they won't be able to run the race.  You can write a check payable to "George Ramos", and send it to:  George Ramos, c/o Villiger Construction, 59-036 Kahauola St., Haleiwa, 96712

As is typical with all HURT events, the party doesn't stop at the finish line, so hang out for a while.  We've ordered beautiful weather for the day, so plan on jumping in the Ocean and spending the afternoon at the beach!

We will do a training run on the course next Saturday, 5/19.  We highly suggest previewing the course, because it's easy to get lost up there, but mostly because it's super awesome.  We'll post the time of next week's course preview after the weekend.

Friday Night Maunawili Trail Run - May 11th

Last minute post, but I'd like any company willing to run by local time (be flexible that is). I'm starting around 7pm ish after all kids, wife and things are done. Leaving from the Maunawili Falls Trail gate, and just running for a while. Can't promise the exact start or end time so call or text if interested - family rules apply. 808-497-3911

Run For George

A new race has just been added to the HURT Trail Series schedule!  On Saturday, May 26 at 7 AM, will be the "RUN FOR GEORGE".  This will be a fundraiser for our good buddy, George Ramos, who is battling cancer.  We've scheduled this the day before the "Paddle for George" event so you can do both!  It's a three day weekend so you'll have Monday to recover!

George face

There will be NO ENTRY FEE for this race.  It will be DONATION ONLY.  100% of all donations will go directly to George to help with his medical expenses.  Any size donation is acceptable; we would suggest at least $10, but more is better, and less is OK.  So please show up and show your support for George.

The location of the race will be the incredibly awesome trails of the Pupukea-Paumalu Forrest Reserve. Distance will be around 9 or 10 miles.  These are beautiful single track trails with breathtaking views of the North Shore surf breaks.

So put this on your calendar now.  We will do a course preview run the weekend before.  I will post more information soon.  We could use a few more course marshalls because it's a maze up there!  So if you'd like to volunteer please let me or Sean P. know.

Spread the word!

Saturday Training 5-12-12: Peacock Flats

Aloha Athletes,

This week we are offering a typically, dry option for those of you still drying your shoes from this past Saturday's Run with a View. If you have never run Peacock, now is the time to do this.

Of course, this is for early birds (and the fact some people think getting up past 4:30 a.m. is sleeping in), you will need to get up early. Your reward: beautiful views, cool breezes and great company.

Two starting time options: 4:30 a.m. sharp from the usual parking area by Long Road with Marian or the more civil (???) 6:00 a.m. start with Cheryl from the parking area behind the Control Tower at Dillingham Airfield.

Make sure you start with at least 60+oz of water, electrolytes, and some nutrition. Also, don't forget your sunscreen.

I guess a good strategy would be to make a day of it on the North Shore, get your run in, jump in the ocean to cool off and then head to Cholo's for salt and fluids replenishment with margarita's or Banzai Sushi in Haleiwa.

Whatever you decide, get out there and run.

Aloha, Bob
