They are there for your safety and to ensure course compliance so that we can continue to offer this race in the future!

This run is dedicated to Matt Leathers, Navy SEAL and HURT runner, was lost at sea off Kaena Point while participating in open water swim training this past February. Matt ran in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the HURT 100 as well as numerous of the HURT trail series run. It was not uncommon for one to be running the Tantalus trails in the early morning and to suddenly encounter him stealthily running out there as well. As this is H.U.R.T.'s Independence Weekend event and due to its location, please also think of not only Matt but also all of the service members that we have had the distinct honor to have shared dirt and mud with.

See you there!

Saturday Training: June 29, 2013 Firecracker Preview Run

Aloha Athletes:

I don't know if you are feeling it also, but it feels like the month of June is passing at the speed of light! For the final Saturday training run in June, we will be meeting at the end of the pavement at Mokuleia past Dillingham Airfield and Camp Erdman. The turn-around will be where the pavement begins again on the Waianae coast side at Yokohama Bay. Be there at 6:00 a.m. (6:30 start) for approximately 10 miles on the Kaena Point trail. Jeff will be leading this run will be at a relaxed, training-mode pace. Speedsters will be on their own. This trail is flat, hot, with sun exposure. It is also a protected preserve area, so stay on the trail and use the gates accordingly.

It is summer, folks.  That means heat, and lots of it.  That means you need to carry adequate fluids.  Do not show up to run these trails without a reasonable amount of fluids, calories, electrolytes, and sunscreen. Do not go off of sanctioned trails. Be smart out there and do not take chances! Mother Nature does not take kindly to people who take unnecessary risks while playing in her domain. Last weekend's casualties remind us that being in Nature carries personal responsibility for our own well-being. Take it seriously, please!

As of this positing, there are 46 spots available for the Kaena Point Firecracker 10-Mile on July 6.  You must sign up on UltraSignup by Tuesday, July 2.  This is a super fun run and a great way to celebrate Independence Day.  It is a beautiful place to run and picnic with friends and family afterward.

As we are training for runs or just training for life, we are blessed with great trails and the best weather and scenery on the planet. However, that blessing has gotten tarnished recently by car break-ins at two commonly-used parking areas; Pali lookout and Makiki pumping station (before the Nature Center). Be sure to never leave valuables in your car and try to make it look as uninviting as possible. Nothing puts a damper on a great run faster than coming back to a smashed window and personal items gone.

Have a great weekend and happy running!

End Your Holiday Week with a BANG!!

Firecracker Race Fine Print: Kaena Point is a fast, flat, out-and-back course that parallels the ocean along jeep trails and an old sugar cane rail line. The course runs from the end of the pavement at Mokuleia past Dillingham Airfield and Camp Erdman, to where the pavement begins again on the Waianae coast side at Yokohama Bay. We will have an aid station with water set up at the turnaround, however, we will require ALL runners to carry adequate water (at least one 20 ounce bottle) during the run. Saturday Training: June 15, 2013 Peacock Flats

Aloha Athletes: This weekend features more than one opportunity to run great trails with great folks.

On Saturday, Peacock Flats is on the menu.  Meet at the Dillingham Airfield at 5:45 a.m. for a 6:00 start.  Distance will be around 17 miles; go shorter or longer if you like.  Be prepared for some heat!

On Sunday, a handful of crazed fathers (and non-fathers) will be doing the Tantalus Father’s Day Fat Ass 12-Hour.  Here are the details:

  • Start/Finish at the Nature Center in Makiki (park in the lower lot or in the neighborhood before the Nature Center)
  • June 16, 2012 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. (or when we are all tired of running any more)
  • Easy 2-1/2 Mile Loop—you know it as up Hogsback, Crossover and back down Center trail.
  • Provide your own support - you should be able to safely stash it at the Nature Center

This is be open to any one—not just fathers. If you had a father, you’re eligible! It can be a family event as anyone (even kids), can do a 2-1/2 mile loop at least once. Have your family bring a picnic lunch or we can do a potluck/barbeque. Just keep it all low key.

Be sure to tell Dad that you love him!  Have a great weekend and Happy Running!

2013 Mango Madness Results

Aloha Athletes,

I am sure today's race was pure "Madness" in the best of all ways! Unfortunately, a Saturday morning appointment kept me from the run. However, I did get out for a bit of early MTB madness before duty called.

In any case, I will let others write up and hopefully send in some links to photos, however, I wanted to get the results posted. What is not shown in these results; Who ended up with multiple trips up Concrete Road??? Only those with sore calves will know!
