Clean Up Crew Needed for Sunday of HURT at Nature Center

Thank you everybody for your quick response to our request for volunteers. We have now filled the schedule of shifts for food prep and runner servicing!

However, we still need to confirm who is able to show up at 5pm Sunday to help with the aid station shut-down. What's involved is a gradual process of moving supplies out of the station near the end. We still need to keep food and drinks out on the tables for the last finishers, but we can get a few thing out of the way until then.

At 6, we move the picnic tables to their original locations, and take out most of the coolers etc (after emptying them). Everything eventually (by 6:30) has to be moved out to the U-haul, and the lawn (lost and found stuff). We try to give away any usable food items, so it doesn't have to be thrown out.

Last step is to hose down all the decks, and clean the area (including the bathrooms) to leave it as we found it. I think clean up crew was out of there by 7:30 or so....John and Stan and I limped out to drive home before dark, so we wouldn't fall asleep on the way home.

Anyway, that's the routine- we 'd want to have about 8-10 names on the crew, with one volunteer who can be responsible for directing (The Clean-up Nazi). Lots of extra kukui nuts for this job!

Sunday December 29th: Ka'ahele to Waimano

Aloha Athletes, Cool cat

This Sunday, we'll be heading back for another trail run/hike at Ka'ahele led by Cheryl. This is the same hike from Dec 14th, we want to get in another run before it gets overgrown again and we hope to see lots of smiling faces. Same plan, meet at the park at 6:30 AM (corner of Naalii and Kaahele). Please be quiet as we are in a residental neighborhood until we hit the trail.

Expect about 5 hours of trail time. Bring plenty of snacks and sunscreen and 70+ ounces of water.

Driving directions: If you are coming from Honolulu, take H-1 freeway ewa direction to the Waimalu Exit. After taking the Waimalu Exit, immediately get into the left lane and prepare to stop at the traffic light. Take another left at the stop light, getting onto Moanalua Rd. (heading Diamondhead). Go to the 2nd traffic light, Kaahele St., and take a left (mauka). Continue up Kaahele St. for quite a distance up the hill, until you reach the stop sign at Naalii Street. The neighborhood park is on the left and there is plenty of parking on Kaahele St.

Keep your calendars clear next weekend for a special goodbye run to one of our H.U.R.T. ohana who is leaving the island. I'll post full detail soon but it will likely be Sunday January 5th.

Merry Christmas!

Rosie

REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS 2014 HURT100 Race, Nature Center, Start-Finish Line

The Hawaiian Ultra Running Team (HURT), is putting on the fourteenth annual 100 mile trail race on Jan. 18 and 19th.  We start at the Makiki Nature Center on Sat at 6am. The cut-off is Sunday, 6pm.

My husband, John, and I, are organizing the start-finish line aid station, and putting together our team of volunteers again. We will also have a contingent of volunteers from Tripler, thanks to Joel Jenkins.

Basically our volunteers help prepare aid station food- fruit, sandwiches, cookies, soups- and keep levels of the water and Gatorade coolers full. Volunteers also greet the runners as they come in, and cater to their every needs- help them get to their drop bag, fill their water bottles, show them where the food it, cheer them on! etc.

After the 6am start, the runners start coming back into our aid station late Saturday morning, from the first of five 20 mile loops. The route is Nature Center- Paradise Park- Nuuanu Jackass Ginger- Nature Center, via the trails. They run throughout the night, and some right up to 6 pm Sunday.

Half of our runners are from the mainland, Canada, China, & Japan, Iceland, Russia, Chili, Australia, Germany this year. It is inspiring to watch them come in and out of our aid station, and rewarding to help them get through a grueling race.

We are looking to fill the following shifts with about three-four volunteers each shift:

·         Sat     10 am to 4 pm    lot of food prep and kitchen set up for the duration

·         Sat     4 pm to 10pm-    the usual runner assistance

·         Sat     10 pm to Sun 4 am           "

·         Sun     4am to 10 am                  "

·         Sun     10 am to 5 pm                 "

·         Sun      5 pm to 7 pm  tear-down and clean-up

Other miscellaneous jobs include:

·         1 pm Friday for the Mandatory Runner's Mtg- parking nazi for 2 hours, at entrance to Nature Center

·         4:15 am Saturday, parking Nazi at entrance to Nature Center, until 5:45 am

·         7 am to 10 am- help with aid station set-up (organize runner's drop bags)

·         5:30 am- set up glow lights along beginning of trail for the start

·         An aid station volunteer to replace PJ (out on special duty) for about 5 hours, some time middle of the night

·         on- call gofers,  any time

If you wish to volunteer, please email PJ at hurtpals@aol.com, or call me at 351-1453 to I can schedule you in.   Many thanks, PJ Salmonson

Saturday December 21st: North Shore Pupukea Run @ 8am

Aloha Athletes,

This week, Steve V. is going to be leading us up on the North Shore in the Pupukea-Paumalu Forest Paradise_oahu_004Reserve. Plan for a few hours of rolling hills on sweet single track overlooking breathtaking views of the North Shore surf breaks. It's big wave season too...we might even spot some whales.

Meet at the Sunset Beach Elementary School parking lot. That's directly across the street from Ehukai Beach Park, you know, the one that stages the Pipeline Master's surf contest. Park in either the lower school lot, out on Kam Hwy, or across the street at the Beach Park.

Let's start on North shore time...at 8 am this week.

See you Saturday!

Saturday December 14th, Ka'ahele to Waimano

Aloha Athletes,
Frosty
This Saturday, join Cheryl & Rex & Steve D. for a trail run/hike at Ka'ahele. Where is that you ask? Why it's the run with a view course that we do every May for the trail series. The route will be significantly different as we'll be going straight up to the top and then over on the trail to Waimano. It has just been trimmed so perfect timing. Water will be dropped at Waimano but please make sure to bring either two bottles or 70+ oz in your pack.

Meet at the park at 6:00 AM (corner of Naalii and Kaahele). Please be quiet as we are in a residental neighborhood until we hit the trail.

Expect about 5 hours of trail time. Bring plenty of snacks and sunscreen and candy canes.

See you Saturday,

Rosie

Saturday December 7th: Tantalus (& H.U.R.L. does Haleakala!)

Aloha Athletes,
Maui
We're in for a special treat this weekend, we have a member of our H.U.R.T. ohana, Jake Hinz, in town who will be with us hitting the trails and leading the run!

Meet at the Nature Center at 6:30 (Yes 6:30!). The plan is to go for anywhere up to 24 miles with an out and back to Jag, returning by Manoa Cliffs with a tacked on reverse trek. If you want to cut it shorter, you can always just join in for a trek loop or portion of the course. Great bonus miles for those doing the marathon on Sunday.

On another note, last weekend Shawna, Kelly, Susie and myself went to Maui to do some extra training on new terrain in the crater of Haleakala. Check out Maui2Susie's blog post for more info (Thanks Susie!) We can't wait to hit up more neighbor islands and share more stories with ya'll.

See you Saturday!
