Saturday training Runs: To return in March...

Aloha Athletes, Zzzz

We'll be taking the month of February off from organized Saturday runs so we can rest up and finish planning for the start of the upcoming H.U.R.T. trail series! March 15th kicks it off with the Aiea Loop Express 7 miler. It's a new one in the series and is certain to be a loads of fun, considering the fact that the race directors are none other than Michael Cole and Mr. Randy Flores. You may even see a leprechaun or two if you keep your eyes peeled.

The course preview run will be March 8th...but more on that later. For now, make sure to check out all the races in the trail series and most importantly, SIGN UP!

We typically sell out for every race, so don't get left behind!

Happy Trails,

Rosie

Volunteer Shirts, Runner's Shirts sizing and Lost & Found

If there are any volunteers that didn't get a shirt, please call / email  PJ. 351-1453/ hurtpals@aol.com.
I will bring some shirts to Hoomaluhia tomorrow.

Likewise, I'll bring the Runner's shirts if anyone wants to try and exchange sizes.

Somehow I ended up with 3 pairs of trail shoes- don't have a clue where they came from....anybody?

Also, Gary Robbins left a single Black Diamond walking pole in a black mesh and nylon bag that had somehow ended up with his gear. Let us know if you are missing one.

Robert & Sharon's Photos from the 2014 HURT100

Well, this year was particularly challenging for me personally.  Between my Crohn’s related health challenges and some unexpected and rather frustrating photography equipment technical challenges this certainly wasn’t my finest performance.  Thankfully there were several other dedicated photographers out there working hard to capture the memories for as many of the runners, pacers, crew & volunteers alike.  I plan to come back next year much healthier and better prepared but then again who doesn’t?

Enough babble, on with the show.  Here’s about 600 of my best images from this year.  Happy viewing!

Health & Happiness,

Robert P Smith

Post H.U.R.T. 100 Annual Potluck (and short shuffle) 1-25-14

Aloha Athletes,

Congrats to all those who toed the line to run/volunteer/pace or help in any way at the H.U.R.T. 100 this year! This Saturday we'll be doing our annual recovery run/shuffle/walk whatever you decide to make it. Please come out and share your stories and enjoy some good times with friends. Argh

Meet at the Ho'omaluhia Gardens in Kaneohe (map) outside the garden at the gate at 7am. Please make sure to stay quiet as this is a residential area. Round trip will probably take an hour or so to do an out and back in the Garden (~5-miles). Those wanting a bit more can go to the Pali Lookout and back, around 9 miles.

The garden opens at 9:00 for cars and we typically potluck all the way in at the last parking/picnic area starting between 9:30 - 10.

Aloha,

Rosie

seeking partner for Trans-Alpine

I'm looking for a partner for Trans-Alpine this year.  It's an 8 day stage race through the Alps Aug30-Sep6.  You can learn more about it here and see the exciting videos.  It is only open to teams of 2. It's a bit pricey, and a long way from Hawaii of course, but maybe mainland hurtsters may be interested. Or if you can think of someone who might be up for it pass the word on. Please e-mail kaiser at hawaii dot edu if you are interested.  Nick

How to Follow the HURT 100 this Weekend

Aloha Athletes,

We know most of you will be out at the HURT 100 this weekend. For many it is the culmination of months of training, for others you will be there volunteering at an aid station, serving as a pacer or safety patrol. However if you can't get out, you have a couple of options.

You can follow live tracking of runners via http://www.ultralive.net/hurt100/

Another option this year is to watch live via http://www.ultrasportslive.tv

Ultrasportslive will have camera's set up at all three aid stations. I am not sure if they will be out on the course at other locations or not.

Of course I am sure there will be Facebook updates and Twitter tweets as well. Use the hastag #HURT100.

For the last several years the HURT 100 course has been relatively dry. This year we might have a bit more mud given the rain over the last few days.

So get out there if you can and support the race. We got an incredible field of runners this year and they would love your support.

Aloha, Bob

Video of a 20 Mile Loop From The 2011 HURT 100

Sitting around the house, freaking out because you're tapering? Trying to mentally prepare for the HURT 100 and find yourself closing your eyes trying to remember the course? Don't know what to do on that long 6 hour flight over to Hawaii and want to see what the course looks like?
Well I have the solution for you! Watch or download these videos that take you on the 2011 HURT 100 course!  Videos are ~2GB each.
Part 1 takes you from the start line to the Paradise aid station, then back up near the top of the switchbacks.  Part 2 finishes the switchbacks, then down to the Jackass Ginger aid station, and back to the start/finish.
The original video ended up being over 30GB, so these have very degraded video quality.  Once I find free online storage that lets me share much larger files I'll upload a higher resolution video, but that might not be do-able for a while yet.
You might want to turn the volume down...the music comes on pretty loud about 20 seconds into the video.
Enjoy!

Photos of the HURT100 Course & Past Events

For those that might not be part of the HURT100 Facebook group...

For those that want a little preview/reminder of what’s to come.  Trail conditions could be totally different than what’s pictured in these though since some of them are three years old now.  View at your own risk.  Warning:  May cause extreme desire to do insane things like get out there and HURT yourself.

The first couple albums were my attempt to document the entire course.  I have yet to complete that little project.  ;)

Saturday Training 1/11/14: Annual Week before H.U.R.T. 100 Trek Loop

Aloha Athletes and Happy New Year!

For those running, pacing, and volunteering at the HURT 100 we are a mere 10 days away! Ken

We are planning to run a reverse Trek loop (~10 miles) at an easy pace this Saturday starting at 7:00 a.m. from the Nature Center. Invite your pacer's and let's get a bunch of people out there. In years past, we have even had some early arrivals from the mainland join us.

If you can't make it, Mark Speck will also be taking some pacers and patrollers out this Fri, 1/10, evening for some night ops from 6:30 - 8:30. It will be a short out and back from Paradise Park to the beginning of JAG and back. About 2hrs to test night equipment and nighttime trail orientation. We will meet on Manoa Rd on the righthand side after the last bus stop.

We are looking forward to seeing all our visiting friends and H.U.R.T. ohana!

Rosie

Aloha Athletes and Happy New Year!  OK, we are down to the wire here for those running, pacing, and volunteering at the HURT 100. I wrote the RD this morning and asked him why he chose the dryest month of the year to hold the race as it again looks as if the trails will be dried out by race day. (P.S. He hasn't responded)  We are planning to run a reverse Trek loop at an easy pace this Saturday starting at 7:00 a.m. from the Nature Center. Running the Night Jan 3rd 2014

Leaving from Paradise Park around 5pm for a night crawl.  Likely last long run, so slow and steady (and safe).  Plan for a loop plus repeat.  Parking below the bus stop on Manoa Rd.  Lights, food, umbrella (jk) and good attitude.  Come for a few miles, a few hours or less.  If you need to start earlier or later, feel free and we'll connect on the trails.  Aloha - Paul S.
