Saturday March 29th: Course Preview for Vi's Top of Tantalus (7 miles)

Aloha Athletes,

Judy will be leading a course preview run for the upcoming Vi's Top of Tantalus 7 miler. Race day is April 12th so if you aren't sure of the course, I highly suggest coming to the preview. Judy just so happens to be one of the race directors and always puts on an incredibly fun and memorable event. For those that haven't been to Puu Ualakaa Park, this race is worth it for the view alone!

  • Start time:  7am, meet in main parking lot
  • Distance: 7 miles
  • Location: Puu Ualakaa Park is about two miles up Tantalus Mountain on Roundtop Drive. The approximate address to the entrance gate of the park is 3200 Round Top Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822

As always don't forget to sign up for the race! Remember there are no show up and sign ups for any of the races in the H.U.R.T. series.

Saturday March 22nd: 7am Pupukea Trail Run

Aloha Athletes, 6101687762_c4fb9c5d7a_b

This weekend Steve V. will be leading a run to the Pupukea trail on the North Shore. It's a combination of beautiful solitary paved road and lush trails. Estimated time is probably around 4 hours round trip at a relaxed pace.

About the run: The Pupukea trail starts at the end of Pupukea Road. After you enter the yellow gate near the boyscout camp, just follow the paved road until you reach the Mile 19 marker. Soon afterwards, you will see a trail to the right side of the road. Don't forget to stop at the lookout on your way back. We'll only be going to the 3 ribbon stopping point before heading back. The conditions deteriorate pretty rapidly after that point to pure bushwhacking. If you want to continue, bring long sleeves, thick boots, and glasses to keep from getting poked by strawberry guavas and uluhe ferns. It was very muddy last weekend when we explored the trail, so lace up those shoes tight!

Directions: On Kamehameha Highway, from Haleiwa heading towards Sunset Beach, turn right on Pupukea Road (at Foodland). Continue up the road, past the Pu`u `O Mahuka Heiau, until the road ends at a gate and Camp Pupukea. Park below the Boy Scout camp along the road. Meet at 7am outside the gate.

Getting in to the Irish theme

Yesterday kicked off the start of our trail series with the sold out Aiea Loop Express. Starting before dawn, runners began to arrive wearing their finest shades of green to celebrate the St. Patty’s day theme. It was a fantastic day full of both sunshine and rain, complete with plenty of mud for everyone to slip and slide in as they ran the course. I personally got a kick out of the fact that just about every runner there had this years HURT 100 shirt on...we must have set some kind of World Record for the most people in a single place wearing the same shirt ;)

A huge mahalo to our race directors Mike and Randy (and kids!). From the decorations to the mustaches to the tattoos, Irish themed treats and shamrock prizes, and copious amounts of mouthwatering food at the race finish, they, with the help of a huge team of volunteers, pulled off everything without a hitch. A highlight of the race was Andy Grandinetti out on course, playing his bagpipes as runners went by! Special thanks to John and PJ for doing an amazing timing job. The runners likely weren’t aware but the laptop we normally use broke right before the start of the race, but John and Randy were able to save the day and McGyver a solution to bring you your race results.

Results can be viewed here:   Aiea Loop Express Results 2014

Congrats to Jason Hynd and Candes Gentry for their wins. We had an unusually large number of runners visiting us from outside the islands, from as far away as the East Coast all the way to Spain. The 11 years old speedster Kieran from Connecticut gave the front of the pack a run for their money, finishing 14th overall.

Most importantly, it's important to remember that none of the races in our trail series could possibly happen without all the work completed behind the scenes by the race volunteers. A warm aloha to Cheryl, Andy G, Jeff, Melanie, Augusto, Mike Hee, Steve and Malia Clemmons, Huddy, Rex, Steve D and Steve V, Andy Cole, Jacque, Judy, Marian and Neal, Randy's kids, Brenda, Susie, Juliet, Rosie and everyone else who took part in organizing and cleaning. None of this can happen without you. Trail marking was done by: Randy and kids, Jeff, Melanie, Keith, and Diana. Melanie was also gracious in providing hats of her own design for the top male and female finishers. If you'd like to purchase one of your own, visit her facebook page Lucky We Run Hawaii (website coming soon).

We were lucky to have photographer extraordinaire Augusto DeCastro out on course and at the finish taking photos. He has made all photos available for free to runners for download. If you use them anywhere on the ‘net, please make sure to give him credit by placing his link http://www.augustodecastrophotography.com in your post.

Don’t forget to sign up for the next race in the series, Vi’s Top of Tantalus on April 12th. As of this posting there are 74 slots still available.

A hui ho,

Saturday March 15th: Aiea Loop Express 7 Miler

Aloha Athletes,

This weekend is the start of the 2014 H.U.R.T. trail series and we're kicking it off with the Aiea LO.htmoop Express 7(ish) miler.  Prizes will be given for the top 10 men and women and for the best costume!

Just a reminder that the trail series races are no longer show-up-and-sign-up and Aiea Loop is sold out . There will be no race day registration available.

After the race, there will be a spread of the usual race munchies to eat. During the race, there will be NO aid stations. Make sure to bring any water or food that you will need for yourself during the run.

The gate to the park will open at 6 am. Bathrooms are available at both the top and bottom parking lots. Race start is at 7am and race number assignment is at 06:30. Please arrive early enough to park & bring your stuff up to the start & sign-in.

Parking is extremely limited so please try to carpool. All runners will need to park in the upper parking and walk down to the start in the lower parking lot.

Direction:  Follow H-1 to Moanalua Highway (Route 78). Take the ‘Aiea cutoff to the third traffic light, make a right turn at ‘Aiea Heights Drive and follow it about 3 miles up to the end of the road. Continue on the one-way park road to the trailhead. (more info)

As for the course, it is 7 miles of rolling hills. We'll be starting from the bottom parking lot and proceeding counter-clockwise around Aiea Loop. Sorry, there is no course map so be prepared to follow the white and green course markings. As always, BLUE is BAD! So do not go that direction. Bad section & hazards will be clearly marked with blue ribbons.

Most important of all...it's St. Pattys day weekend, so please be sure to wear your GREEN! Funny hats, leprechaun attire, shamrocks, and face paint encouraged.

See you Saturday!

Saturday March 8th: Course Preview for Aiea Loop Express

Aloha Athletes, Shamrock

This Saturday meet in the lower parking loop at 6am for the final course preview for the Aiea Loop Express 7 miler happening March 15th. This will only be a single loop (but feel free to run as many as you like!)

The race is sold out so I hope you all got a coveted slot. Make sure to sign up now for any of the races throughout the rest of the season, they are all moving fast.

In the spirit of the race and St. Pattys Day, Cheryl says wear something green!

Great Day Today!

Photo from Arvel Thanks to everyone who came out this morning for the Aiea plus run...It was just amazing out there...
We had some mud, but not bad, misty rain and we ran thru the clouds.  Most of us made it almost to the tunnels, Rex and Gordon continued on to the summit.
Nice to see Arvel back out there and the newbies even had coffee and fruit waiting for us at our finish.
It was an awesome morning...
