Sunday February 1st: Waimano to Kaahumanu @ 6:30

Aloha Athletes,

Can you find this spot on the trail?? Photo by Augusto DeCastro

This weekend the lovely Wendi is going to be leading an easy exploration of the trails from Waimano to Kaahumanu. Geared toward beginners, plan to turn around about 1 1/2 hours in bringing the total to approximately 3 hours on the trail. Start time of 6:30 and remember this is for SUNDAY not Saturday.

Meet at the Waimano trail head, at the top of Waimano Home Road in Pearl City. No bathrooms exist the at trailhead. Park on Komo Mai Drive (fire station next to it) or Manana neighborhood park at Kuahaka and Leomele streets. The trails begin at the end of the chain link fence. Here's a map to help you out.

Thank you Wendi!!

Aloha Athletes,

Photos by Rob Lahoe

Congrats to all those who toed the line to run/volunteer/pace or help in any way at the H.U.R.T. 100 this year! This Saturday we'll be doing our annual recovery run/shuffle/walk aka whatever you decide to make it. Please come out and share your stories and enjoy some good times with friends.

Meet at the Ho'omaluhia Gardens in Kaneohe (map) outside the garden at the gate at 7:30 am. Please make sure to stay quiet as this is a residential area. Round trip will probably take an hour or so to do an out and back in the Garden (~5-miles). Those wanting a bit more can go to the Pali Lookout and back, around 9 miles.

The garden opens at 9:00 for cars and we typically potluck all the way in at the last parking/picnic area starting between 9:30 - 10.

H.U.R.T. will provide cups, plates, napkins, etc as well as a few drinks.

2 Days of FREE Trail Building Classes - Jan 24-25th - Updated

Aloha Athletes,

The awesome team at Oahu Mountain Bike Ohana, IMBA and the State of Hawaii have been working hard arranging a weekend full of classes to help us learn about and maintain our trails. Come learn about trail design, technique and about the invasive species and how to eradicate them when you see them on the trails. Skills apply to both runners and bikers alike and this course is open to anyone interested in attending.

Or for those of you that want to relax after running the 100 mile event this weekend, this is also the day we'll be having our annual Potluck & party at Ho'omaluhia gardens...but I'll post more on that next week ;)

Final Plea - missing aid station supplies

Yey! Nature Center aid station now has parking Nazi's covered both days (Barbi and Rob Lahoe), as well as  coffee gophers (Jessie Faige & Tara O'Neill) - Thank you!!!
This is one last plea for our aid station supplies (mostly aimed at HURT Trail series Race Directors - please everybody look in your storage areas - We are missing the shallow green bin with all of the kitchen utensils I've collected over the years, as well as some white Costco tables. The only table we have left over here is the folding one Julie donated a couple years ago. Please let me know if you have any of this stuff. I'll need to shop for replacements by Monday.
Thanks everybody!

Want to earn some kukui nuts for the 2016 HURT 100? Coffee gopher and parking nazi needed!

Hey everybody,

Barbie McAllaster was kind enough to volunteer for the parking nazi on Friday afternoon, for the Mandatory Runners' meeting.

So we still need a good soul to handle parking for an hour and a half Saturday morning, at the Nature Center, 4:15 am. That will give you enough time to run up and see the start. Also, for the sake of us spending a day and a half working the three aid stations, we will be desperate for coffee to help us stay awake.

Help! Can somebody take care of us, and pick up coffee at Manoa Starbucks, 7:30pm Saturday, and then 5am Sunday? Don't forget, volunteer work wins you kukui nuts for next year's race (oh no, not that!)

Kokua Day: Trail maintenance volunteering

Aloha trail runners!!!

This Saturday, January 10, we will be working with Na Ala Hele (NAH) to perform various types of work on the Tantalus and Nu'uanu trails in preparation for the big event in two weeks. We will be meeting up at the Na Ala Hele offices/base yard at 7am (just up the driveway past the Nature Center) to sign waivers, get instruction, and pack equipment before heading up to the areas of work. Those wishing to partipate should be able to willing to do put in a good day's amount of manual labor as we will be hiking in from the trail heads (and back out) with tools as well as performing the necessary trail work (i.e., vegetation clearance, trail widening).

If you would like to volunteer in this effort, please contact me ([email protected]) by the morning of Thursday, January 8, as we need to get a approximate number of people NAH. Volunteers shoud bring water and snacks/energy as well as wear appropriate clothing (i.e., old pants, shirts, hiking/trail shoes). We should be finished and back at the Nature Center by about 1:30/2pm.

Mahalo for your support!!

Saturday January 10th: Annual Week before H.U.R.T. 100 Trek Loop @ 7am

Aloha Athletes and Happy New Year!

For those running, pacing, and volunteering at the HURT 100 we are less than 2 weeks away!

This Saturday, as per tradition, we are planning to run a reverse Trek loop (~10 miles) at an easy pace this Saturday starting at 7:00 a.m. from the Nature Center. Meet at the picnic tables and invite your pacer's and let's get a bunch of people out there on the trails. In years past, we have even had some early arrivals from the mainland join us.

We are looking forward to seeing all our visiting friends and H.U.R.T. ohana!
