Mahalo and Happy Holidays!

Mahalo to all the awesome volunteers and Oahu Na Ala Hele for coming out this past weekend to work on the trails! Great results for all the efforts put in! Improvements along Kalawahine & Manoa Cliff trails make them almost highways! Was great having old & new friends working together! Hoping to setup another trail maintenance day soon. Happy holidays everyone!

Trail Maintenance

Photo by Oahu Na Ala Hele

With the high amount of wet & windy weather we've been having, the trails have become both overgrown & blocked by debris. Please lend your kokua as we join up with Oahu Na Ala Hele to help make much needed repairs to the Tantalus trail systems.

We will be meeting at the Na Ala Hele base yard (top of the HNC driveway) to gather equipment then traveling out to areas needing work. Please wear clothes that won't restrict movement yet provide you with adequate protection from any debris. Wear good covered shoes, such as those for trail running or hiking. Na Ala Hele will provide the majority of the tools; however if you have any non-powered tools you wish to bring, please do so. But please be aware that you will be responsible for whatever you bring. Also bring adequate water for at least 5-hrs of work as well as snacks.

Date: December 19, 2015 (Saturday)
Time: 7:30AM

Good luck to everyone running the 43rd Honolulu Marathon tomorrow (December 13, 2015). Whether you are doing it to accomplish a personal goal, to support a friend, or to dedicate your journey to your loved ones, the HURT Ohana is with you all the way.

Also, a few HURT peeps received their Christmas wish early as they were selected to run the Miwok 100k on May 7, 2016. Congratulations Jacki Doppelmayer, Rod Huddleston, and Scott Kuwaye!

The HURT Hawaii Site: 10+ Years

Aloha Athletes,

As you have probably noticed, the HURT Hawaii site has a new look. This site was created a little over 10 years ago when blogging was still pretty new. Before this site, Don Fallis, Cheryl Loomis, as well as John and PJ Salmonson would organize weekly training runs and we would all find out about them either over the phone or via e-mail through a Yahoo group. We were a much smaller group back then and this was way before Facebook and other social media.

Other runners at that time included Neal and Marian Yasuda, Rex Vlcek and Bob Murphy. Vernon Char was a regular on Friday evening night runs as well. There were many others. Arvel and Benita Shults started joining in as did Paul Sibley. Kat Tagaca also ran many of the runs. Mike Muench joined in at some point as well. Steve Dewald and Jim Masterson were part of the early groups too. I know there were many others and many before this as well. Pete Martinez was also very much involved. Brian Wilson ran a lot with us back then too. Ed Bugarin and Ben Cavazos were doing some crazy night runs. I know I am probably forgetting people and I apologize for that. Others runners included Jeff Huff, Nick Kaiser…the list goes on and on.

Here is Don's introduction to the blog:

So…with fond aloha and so many great memories, it is time for a new adventure. Barbi and I are flying out this week to our new home in Boise, ID. We are excited and looking forward to new trails, playing in the snow and being able to take road trips!

A big thank you to John and PJ for all they have done related to HURT and making this a great space for all of us to play.

I am also excited to see what evolves with HURT Hawaii. Augusto is taking over this site and the new look is just the start.

Until we meet again!

Aloha, Bob & Barbi
