Aloha Athletes, 6a00d83451d2fd69e201b8d136296d970c-500wi

It sounds like the group had a great time last week previewing the Maunawili course for the upcoming Run with the Pigs on August 9th. Special thanks to the menehune who is helping to make the course a bit more runnable for you all come race day... Expect another course preview or two for those that are interested in learning the trail but for this week we are taking a slight detour.

This Saturday, Jake will be leading a tour de Kailua. The general route is below, expect 21-25 miles likely at a decent pace :) Make sure to bring water and snacks as it is HOT!

  • Start: Kailua beach park across from buzz's at 6am
  • Run to down north Kalaheo make our way towards the regional park path.
  • Head to the Pali look out.
  • Maunawili trail.
  • Side streets back, maybe hit up the back side of pillbox.

If you have any questions post 'em here.

Saturday July 11th at 6am - Maunawili (Oink!)

Alright runners, Images

We're already down to the final 2 races of the trail series. This Saturday, the playground will be the Maunawili Trail, site of the upcoming Maunawili Out and Back (aka - Run With the Pigs) put on by two of the most legendary RD's around, Marian & Neal.  There are many options for start times and locations - do what works for you. There will be a group starting at the Pali lookout at 6 am. If you plan to do the full distance (22 miles to turnaround point), please take care of your own refueling needs.  Don't forget that it is a long and hot 11 miles each way and good hydration is absolutely imperative.

  • Where: Nuuanu-Pali Lookout (map
  • There are NO bathrooms at the lookout. The nearest public restroom is at a park located on the Kokohead side of the Pali Highway, off of Puiwa Road in Nuuanu. Please plan accordingly.
  • WARNING - There have been numerous break-ins at the lookout over the years; lock up and DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR VEHICLE!

Don't forget to sign up for the race - there will be a relay option as well as the full 22 mile distance. As of this posting there are only 19 slots so don't delay!

Saturday June 20th: Peacock @ 6am

Aloha Athletes,

This Saturday Benita will once again be leading a run at Peacock starting from Dillingham airfield this time at 6am. It's looking like the general direction will be to head up the switchbacks and do an Are's loop but I'm not sure what the proposed mileage will be. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks and a sense of adventure, especially for newbies who will be joining us for the first time!

More info:

The main starting/staging area for Peacock is the Dillingham Airport Control Tower parking lot.

Facilities: 2 bathrooms

Water:  Spigots for filling bottles and packs.

Parking: Parking lot

Safety: 24/7 security. No known cases of car break-ins or thefts. Probably one of the safer places on the island to park.

Happy trails,

Saturday June 13th - Long Road @ 6am

Aloha Athletes,

The lovely Benita will be leading the Saturday run this week up on the North Shore at Peacock. The plan is to start at Long Road at 6am and head up and over to the stash and then return back the same way, around 15ish miles or so. As always folks can plan to go longer or shorter depending on what their plans are. She mentioned BYOB and food after for those that would like to gather afterwards.

Next week we'll be back at Peacock if you can't make it this time!

Saturday March 21st: HURT Fun Hike - Koko Head @ 6am

Aloha Athletes!

This Saturday we will be doing a mellow sunrise hike on Koko Head trail (also known as Hanauma Bay rim trail).  The trail wraps around Hanauma Bay and starts off as asphalt which turns to dirt at the top.  Round trip will be less than 5 miles, but will have some climbs.  We will meet in the parking lot where people usually park to climb the stairs of Koko Crater; however, once we begin our hike promptly at 6am we will proceed opposite direction of Koko Crater going towards Hanauma Bay walking across Kalanianaole Highway.

Google map of where to park and meet in the Koko Head District Park:

The sun rises at 6:34am and if the horizon is clear, we should have a nice view of it coming up from the mouth of Hanauma Bay.  Here's a picture of where we could possibly stop to watch the sunrise.  Once the sun is up we will continue to explore, enjoy the ocean views from above, and potentially see some whales!  Don't forget to pack your hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, hydration, snacks, jacket (if it's still cold), camera, and most importantly your smile.

Email me[at]augustodecastro[dot]com if you have any questions.

Hope to see you,
Augusto
