Run to Sun Winner Shares his Training and Race Report

Kevin Schlag was the winner of the 2008 Run to the Sun Race. Kevin is pretty new to ultra running. In fact, I think this was his first. Kevin has shared his training and race report. I encourage you to take a look. Make sure you scroll down past his training log.

Click here to read it. Thanks for sharing Kevin.

P.S. Kevin, we have another fun little race you might want to think about. It's held each January and is called the H.U.R.T. 100. Train for it like you did Run to the Sun---watch out, you might just win it too. :-)

Cool Opportunity: Maui 12 Hour

Aloha everyone,

The 12 hours of Makawao forest is set for Saturday April 12 from 6 am till 6 pm. The idea is to try to get as many loops on the Kahakapau loop trail within 12 hours. Again this is an unoficial gettogether, anything goes! You can do it solo, a team of 2,3 ,4 ... , Combo with a mountain bike, your dog, swim etc. Just show up even if you just do a couple of hours or just 1 lap.  After the event we'll regroup at the stopwatch bar and grill in Makawao for food and your favorite libation.
Since we've postponed this race from last february's date ,the forest has dried up nicely and the trails are in mint conditions. Let us know what your plans are and more details will follow. You can forward this to anyone interested. Again this is an unofficial gettogether with no rules etc.
C-U on the trails. For more info callTom  @ 2811135 Marsha @575 9796 Donny or me
Thanks

Run to Sun Results

The results are in!

Team Results here.
Individual Results here.

The race was incredible. With a 4:30 a.m. start--running through the cane fields and running through the smoke of a cane fire early. Once we got up the mountain, other than one cool, rainy section, the weather was spectacular. The summit--sunny and warm!!

Congratulations to all the runners!!

Special thanks to all the many volunteers, Valley Isle Road Runners, and John and PJ!!

Photos will be coming soon. Does anyone want to write/post a race report?

Aloha, Bob

Run to the Sun Bib Numbers and Final Participant List

UPDATED 3/13/08

For the first time in 15 years, the Run to the Sun Ultra Marathon is full!!

Pretty exciting times for ultra running in Hawaii right now. The 2008 H.U.R.T. 100 sold out in two weeks and now this.

Click here to see the individual entrants with bib numbers.

Team participants and their bib numbers can be seen here.

If the weather holds, we should have an incredible race. Don't forget, packet pick-up is Friday from Noon until 5:00 p.m. at the Maui Mall Shopping Center near the IHOP entrance.

Good luck to all the runners!

2008 Run to the Sun is Full!!

Race Director John has informed me that applications to the 2008 Run to the Sun race are closed. A record number of individual and teams have entered this year's race so other than those applications still in the mail, he has asked that we pull the application from this site.

David Carlsson Repeat Winner at Hilo to Volcano Ultra

It's hard to keep track of everyone and all of the races. Especially a race that takes place the week after the H.U.R.T. 100. Dave joined us this morning on our run through Manoa.

Last year David Carlsson completed the 100K at H.U.R.T. and a week later went over to the Big Isle and won the Hilo to Volcano Ultra. Pretty gutsy performance but for those you who know David, he does things like that--fairly often.

This year he went back as defending champ and with a bit fresher legs (he didn't run H.U.R.T. this year), took 26 minutes after his time. Congratulations David!!! David mentioned that Nick Kaiser and Tom Craven also ran this year.

Here's a quote from David he sent me via e-mail:
"As far as my run went, compared to the HURT runs, like the 100, Hogsback 12 Hour, or the Triple Trek, it was a piece of cake. By the way, it's been 27 years since my name made the sports headlines. The last time was in 11th grade.  My high school won a tough 16 team wrestling tournament during the holidays. The headline read "Carlson icing on the cake". I was the only individual champion for my winning team."

Ask David about his next big race. Hint: It takes place in Boston and is 26.2 miles.

Here's the text of the article from the Hawaii Tribune-Herald:

New "Unofficial" Maui Run

From H.U.R.T. 100 runner and co-race director for the Run to the Sun

Aloha Friends,

On Saturday February 2nd we'll be having the 12 hours of Makawao forest. This is a totally unofficial get-together of friends, mountain bikers, and runners. You can run, mountain bike combo, team up with a friend or 2, mixed, male or female team etc. any format anything goes. We'll be doing this on a 6 mile loop trail in the Makawao forest off piiholo road. The idea is to do as many loops as possible from 0600 am till 1800 pm and then margaritas and awards at Pollies Cantina afterwards. Again this is totally unofficial etc. If interested email me or contact Marsha Sarver, Tom Armstrong or Donnie Mcgean for more details. You can forward this but again it is not a race its a get-together with friends so be selective who you pass it on to. For those of you training for Run to the Sun in March this would be a great opportunity,
Thanks

Xterra Results

Maui Xterra World Championships submitted by Paul Sibley

Congrats to a wonderful race by a few local ultra runners. With added support to fellow racers who saw many flats, both Steve and Paul completed the off road course in Makena, Maui this weekend. Thanks to their excellent ultra training, they were prepared with the right equipment to mange what unfolded. For one, it was that mystery moment with nature that requires wet wipes. Not saying who, but not Paul. And then the race continues!

Steve posted a sub 4-hour time with a top 200 overall swim and run time against the best off road triathletes in the world. He placed 37th in his division, and then he ate, showered and changed clothes before seeing Paul who placed 46th in his division cross the finish line about 36 minutes later wearing a chartreuse yellow shirt and sweet looking adventure hat. Kudos to Paul for his excellent taste in style. Paul’s excuse was that he helped a pro triathlete fix three flats; sounds like a likely story. But Steve’s use of the bush topped Paul’s well crafted excuse, and now, on to the preparation for HURT!

Here's a link to all of the results.

I noticed Paul Hopwood finished second overall in the 10K trail race on Saturday. Read about it here.

2008 Run to the Sun Application

The running of the Maui Marathon this past weekend reminded me of something else on Maui.

However, first congratulations must go out to Julie Doheney of Kailua and FleetFeet Sports. Julie ran a personal best by over 25 minutes and won the women's race with a time of 3:18! All results can be found here.

There were some other H.U.R.T. regulars running on Maui as well including: Kat Tagaca, Paul Hopwood, David Carlsson and Nick Kaiser.

Finally, this other event, The Run to the Sun is scheduled for March 15th, 2008. The application is on the right side of this site or by clicking here.
