Respect our Aina

I just got back from a run out at Peacock Flats.  By the time I got back to my truck I had with me an extra Succeed pouch and 4 Gu-type pouches which I found on the trails.  I'm sure we've all had something fall out our packs once in a while, but I wanted to reiterate to you all that we need to leave the trails better than we found them.

Also, can someone please e-mail me driving directions to get up to the water drops (just click my name below for e-mail address)?  I talked to some hunters and they said the entrance is on the other side from the airport--whatever that means.

Trails in Google Earth

Aloha,
At the suggestion of a friend, I've tossed up a quick web page of some local trails runs. The trails are downloadable in Google Earth format, so you can zoom in and see the elevation and terrain changes. The aerial views are nice if you've wanted to run a trail but were not sure of where the trailhead was or where the trail ended up. The list is a bit limited right now, (mostly North Shore trails right now) so if anyone wants to send me some files I can add them to the list. You can get to the web page at http://www.honuea.com/trails. Hope this is of use to someone...

Saturday Training 4-5-08 "Top of Tantalus Race Preview"

Aloha Athletes !

Last Saturday's training at Peacock Flats was a blast ! Several old, familiar faces showed up to the surprise of a large group of regulars. Peacock Flats is fast becoming a popular training ground, especially for runners heading for races on the mainland. We will be returning there soon.

With several of the regulars heading for Maui this Saturday, and with the first HURT Trail Series race "Top of Tantalus" scheduled for the following Saturday (April 12) we have something special planned. You'll have the opportunity to run the race course with the Top of Tantalus race directors, Kat Tagaca and Rex Vlcek. Just think, if you already know the course you can kick the race director's okoles. If you don't know the course you'll be stuck behind them. But either way, it will be a blast !Both Kat and Rex are fun to run with. It's a 7 mile loop.

All the fun will start promptly at 7:00 am at the Puu Ualakaa Park toward the top of Round Top Drive. The gate generally opens at 6:30 am. Bring your own water and snacks, unlike the race, the training is un-supported. I'll miss you guys, as I'll be in Seattle on business.  Don

Maui training run around West Mountain

EDIT:  I changed this posting a bit.  Big thanks to Marsha Sarver for giving me some info on the route!

Around September or October, I'm going to do a run from my house in Wailuku town.  It starts along Kahekili highway, just above Takamiya market.  The course is all paved road - maybe some unpaved - and winds through Waihe`e town, then Kahakuloa, Honolua, Napili, Honokowai, Lahaina, Olowalu, Ma`alaea, Waikapu, then back into Wailuku town.  This around-the-mountain course is about 62 miles (thanks for the info, Marsha!).  If I go alone, I intend to use a jogging baby stroller, loading it with supplies and pushing it with me.  If anyone would like to join this fun run, please contact me and we can organize drop points... or more wild and wacky baby stroller action!

I'd like to do this run on a  Saturday morning, maybe starting at 6am.  If other people would like to run this in the opposite direction, I'm all for it!  Run on a Sunday, sure!  Different starting time, not a problem! Nothing is set in stone with this fun run, and I just wanted to post this to let everyone know it's a happening thing.  Sometimes we all need a nudge from someone else to get going on a long run!

Saturday Training 2-23-08

Aloha Athletes !

We're back to semi-normal schedule this week, with only the Swamp Romp and the Pose Running class vying for our regulars. With Saturday being only 4 weeks from Run to the Sun, if you haven't done so already, I'd suggest making sure you have arranged the following: race application;airfare;hotel;transportation

This Saturday we will return to our normal venue. (see below)

Meeting time: 5:50 am

Meeting place: The corner of Makiki St. and Makiki Heights Rd.

Starting time: 6:00 am

Training: One (1) 10 mile Manoa loop followed by three (3) Tantalus Rd. (up only*) to top of Concrete Hill repeats.*We still need volunteers who have pickup trucks or other vehicles for shuttling runners down. Otherwise we will need to run down too. If you have such a vehicle available, please let me know at expo@hawaii.rr.com  Don

Saturday Training 2-16-08 Haleakala Training #3

Aloha Athletes !

With most of our "regulars" doing a Friday night run, our remaining tiny group will do something different this Saturday. Let's meet at the entrance to Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, in Kaneohe, at 6:30 am (no typo...that is 6:30 am). We will do the fun route which takes us thru the Garden, out on the road and then up Old Pali Road, under Pali Highway and up to Pali Lookout. Let's plan on doing two of these (each round trip is 9.6 miles), unless your training has you ready for three.

If you need directions or info, or have questions, please contact me at expo@hawaii.rr.com or 247-4144  Don

Saturday Training 2-9-08 "Haleakala Training 2"

Aloha Athletes !

If the turnout for last Saturday's training run was any indication, there's going to be a lot of people doing this years Run to the Sun. There were 20 excited runners ! This Saturday (2-9-08) we will be doing the same 10 mile Manoa loop, followed by two (2) Tantalus Rd./Concrete Hill "ups" (we will use a couple of pick-up trucks to shuttle us down Tantalus Rd.) and we will finish off with a 3rd. Concrete Hill before returning to the cars. The "up" portion of each Tantalus Rd./Concrete Hill section is approx. 5 miles.

As last week, we will meet and start down by the pumping station at the corner of Makiki St. and Makiki Heights Rd. at 6:00 am. Be there ! As someone wisely said: "Winners train...losers complain".  Questions? Contact Don at expo@hawaii.rr.com or 247-4144.

Saturday Training 2-2-08

Aloha Athletes !

For those of you who have set your sights on one of the most enjoyable and demanding road runs on the planet, Run to the Sun, we have the perfect training for you. This Saturday we start short and slow and will be gradually ramping-up over the next 6 weeks or so, to where you will be ready for Run to the Sun.

The route we will be taking this Saturday will be our most common R2S training route. We will meet at the Triangle Park pumping station, at the corner of Makiki St. and Makiki Heights Drive promptly at 6:00 am. Please don't be late, unless you know the route through Manoa, and want to play catch-up. We will do a 10 mile Manoa loop. followed by a run up Tantalus road/concrete hill. If you have questions, please e-mail me at expo@hawaii.rr.com .  Don

Saturday Training 1-26-08

Aloha Athletes !

The 2008 HURT 100 is now in the history books ! Congratulations to all the runners that competed. Obviously it was a tough race, as only half the number of finishers of 2007 finished in 2008. A big mahalo to Big John, Jeff and PJ, and to all the many volunteers.

Since we will be starting Run to the Sun training next week saturday, we thought it would be good to have a nice, leisurely run somewhere we hadn't been in a while. Our old "Run With A View" race location at the top of Kaahele in Pearl City filled the bill. The course is a nice 8.5 miles and you can do more or less if you like. Just take Kaahele Street mauka, until the road ends and park there, We will start at 7:00 am.  Don
