Hogsback 12 Hour Race

Aloha Athletes !

This Saturday is the race that some have waited 12 months in anticipation. One of those is Mike Muench. This year will be extra special, because it will be our first opportunity to welcome Mike back from his summer of four (yes, 4) 100 mile finishes. Maybe Mike's four 100's were just training runs for the Hogsback 12 hour?Like I said...Mikeee likes this race.

Since this is the last race in the 2007 HURT Trail Series, and is a perfect training run for the HURT 100, make your way to The Hawaii Nature Center at 5:30 am, with a measly $10 in hand, and join us for this fun event. It can't be too tough, after all, it's only 12 hours. A piece of cake! We still have a few of the cool Patagonia shirts for sale for the bargain price of $20. See you there !  Don

Mango Madness -Hurt Trail Series Run- June 9th

Mango Madness Trail Run

Date:    June 9th, 2007,  7:00 AM Start

Where:  At the Upper Makiki Triangle Park (Water Tank Park) below the Nature Center Entrance. (Makiki Heights Drive and Round Top Drive intersection)

Entry Fee:  $10 per entry

An Easy Ten in the Sun

The Mango Madness run is approximately a 10 Miler, primarily trails, along the Honolulu Trail System trails above the Makiki Nature Center, chunks of trails most of us have seen, but in kind of a mad mix.  The race starts at the Triangle Park  (where the water tank is) at the upper reaches of Makiki Street, and just above where Roundtop and Makiki Heights Drives form.

In deference to the rabbits the route begins with a delightful romp up Makiki Heights Drive to the Nature Center access road, and up the access road to the trail head.  It then goes across the stream, wandering along the stream bank past the Nature Center, and takes a left at the Korean Sign, then across the Moleka foot bridge, around the ‘Signs’ bend, across the other foot bridge, to Center Trail.

The course then makes a pleasant sojourn along Center Trail to the ‘Three Way’ at the 'Top' of Center Trail, turns left, and gently makes it way along the slopes of Makiki Valley Trail (Mango’s) to the Nahuina Trail.  Right at Nahuina where it wanders back along the valley to Tantalus Road.   At Tantalus road the route ambles right along the road for about 100 yards, and then finds  ‘Concrete’ Road at the Kalawhahine Trailhead.

An easy jog along Concretes to the summit, then down the small dip, and to the mauka Microwave Station.  At the left of the fence around the Station and to the Pu’uohia Trail which winds down the back side of Pu’uohia. Then Makai along Manoa Cliffs and it's all a pleasant down hill jaunt from the hill top to the finish along the old familiar scenes of a 'reverse trek' loop;  crossing Tantalus Road and down the Moleka Trial.  Moleka through the bamboo, along the cliff side, through the high trees, and down onto the Diamondhead side of Makiki Valley Trail.  Takes a right onto Makiki Valley Trail, down toward the bench at the top of Hog Back’s, right along the ‘Cross-over’ portion of Makiki Valley Trail, and back to the ‘Three Way’.  Left at the Three way and returns down Center Trail back toward the Nature Center, right at the Korean Sign, and back down across the stream.  Finally we give the Roadies a chance to compete with a quarter mile downhill jog to the finish.

Everyone gets a finishers award, even the winners!  (If they arrive from the mainland on time) Lots of food, drinks, and great runner's conversations about the best kind of lubricants to use for chaffing and how to stop yer shorts from bunchin.

This is always a fun run and great time.  It is a wonderful way to see the trails if you don't normally run them.  Everyone is welcome.  We look forward to seeing new faces and we will try our best to make you feel right at home.

Post Windward Half Marathon Report

Today was the running of the Windward Half Marathon and it was run under some pretty good conditions. Though it was very humid we were fortunate to have good cloud cover. I am not sure how many participated (I had heard around 750 but not sure if this is accurate??) however several HURT runners and HURT friends were out pounding the pavement.

Nick Kaiser took home a medal and was probably the fastest HURT runner. Ask him about why his legs were foaming. He had one story but I think it was left over beer foam from him running the Berlin Marathon just a week ago. Ben Cavaso was making quite the statement! He was pushing his son in a baby stroller and making a lot of us look really slow. Bev was also out there as well.

HURT runners also included Mike Garcia, Patricia Carroll, PJ Salmonson, and Cheryl Loomis. PJ & Cheryl were there to surprise and support Kelly McPhearson. Triathlete Wendy Minor ran as training for her upcoming 25th Ironman triathlon and then a week later, Xterra. Since she is in training, a half marathon was not quite enough distance so Cheryl and her went out and ran an extra 5 miles. Barbi ran a good race however had some foot numbness problems that slowed her some. Peter Daspit was out as well. Ray Woo from Runners HI was also running.

Special thanks to Mike Muench who ran the race and then hosted a nice post race party. We all enjoyed fresh fruit, cool drinks, muffins, chips & salsa and most importantly, each others company.

Next year hopefully the race will be on a different day then the Niketown 5K. My daughter was running that today as were lots of other Windward runners. It was nice to have Fleet Feet involved and The Boys and Girls Club. I hope both of these groups plus Castle Medical Center stay involved and see the benefit to promoting this race. I heard some comments about the need for better organization and more aid stations. I know this will come. Personally I would like to see more Kailua support. Barbi and I cashed in our Chip and Cookie 30% off coupon. It was fun, as our friend Wally Amos, was actually in the store. All in all, I think people enjoyed themselves and had a great time.

Aloha, Bob

Windward Half Marathon

The Windward Half Marathon is October 1st at 6:00 a.m. Deadline for entry that includes at T-shirt is coming up quick on September 16.

This race is an excellent opportunity to test your speed on a nice flat course. New sponsors this year include the Boys and Girls Club, Windward Clubhouse which operates out of Kailua Intermediate School. Also signed on as sponsors are Castle Medical Center and Fleet Feet Sports of Kailua.

One change is the start/finish, which will be at Kailua Intermediate School. However, the course itself remains the same as in the past. There is also a 5K and keiki runs of 1 mile and 100 yards, plus a stroller division for the half marathon and 5K.

Applications should be available at most local running stores and at www.active.com

Volcano 10 mile

Hi,

My name is Jakob. My dad is Steve. I am 8 years old. I have run the trail series this year and other

races too. I want to run the 10 mile at the volcano. My mom and brothers are running 5 but I want to go

farther. My dad says he will run with me but I want him to do the marathon like he always does.

If anybody wants to run with me let me know. I can run kinda quick.

Thank You,

Jakob
