Western States Photos

Rex Vlcek took some great photo's of this past weekend's Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. Click here or scroll down the right side of the blog, under Photo Albums, to see a glimpse of what this race is all about.

If you want to meet a couple of the WS participants and hear first-hand about their experiences, come out to the Kaena Point, Firecracker 10-mile Race on Saturday morning and talk story with Bob Murphy and Jeff Huff. Of course, pacer and photographer Rex Vlcek and pacer Cheryl Loomis will also have their stories to tell as well.

Alex and Rayna from the East Coast

This past Saturday, several of us showed up at 6:00 a.m. to run a H.U.R.T. loop. It was wet and muddy throughout the course (Ugh!), however the sun was out and there was a really good breeze blowing.

We had two guests join us, both of whom had not met each other, even though they are part of the same club from back East.

Rayna Matsuno and Alex Papadopoulos, both of Virginia Happy Trails Running Club were in town. As many of you know, Alex was here for some extended work over the last year and ran in this year's H.U.R.T. 100 race. He finished the 100K and went on to finish his first 100 mile race at the VHTRC, Massanutten 100. Alex was back for a quick business trip and Rayna was in town visiting family. Rayna is training for her first 100 miler in Vermont in a couple of weeks. Good luck Rayna!

Thanks to everyone who came out!

Reminder: Western States 100 Webcast

Just a quick reminder: Don't forget to check out www.ws100.com this weekend to follow the progress of Hawaii runners, Jeff Huff (#215) and Bob Murphy (#304) at the Western States 100. Other H.U.R.T. friends running the race include Leon Draxler (144) and Monica Scholz (F7). This 100 mile race goes from Squaw Valley to Auburn, CA.

Here's the direct link to the web cast: http://www.ws100.com/webcast/home.html

If you look at the participant list (click here), many other past H.U.R.T. 100 participant's will also be running the race. It should be quite an interesting race this year with lots of snow towards the start due to the exceptionally wet winter and spring in the Sierra Nevada mountains and all of California for that matter.

Otherwise, see you out on the trails!

Directions to Kaena Point Fircracker Race on July 2, 2005

Several people have asked for directions to the upcoming 2005 H.U.R.T. Trail Series race on July 2nd. This is the Kaena Point, Firecracker 10 mile race.

So, here is a link with directions from the Honolulu International Airport--a central point of reference. Click here for the directions.

Since the end of the road does not really have an address, these directions get you close. Drive to the pavement runs out, you will see us at that point.

See you on race day!

Let me know if you plan to be there so I can drop enough water.

Aloha, Bob

Kaena Point, Firecracker 10 Mile

2005 H.U.R.T. Trail Series, Mango Madness Results

This past Saturday, June 4th, Race Directors, Pete and Judy put on a really fun race.

How I remember it--five miles uphill and five miles downhill.

I think a good time was had by all--click here for the results for both men and women.

While some of us were having fun at Mango Madness, several H.U.R.T. runners were over on the Big Island, competing in the Honu Trialthlon. Honu is a qualifier for the Kona Ironman and congratualtions to all of the competitors.

Nick Kaiser, Gil Lommis, and Wendy Minor got into Ironman as a result of their performance in this race. Steve Dewald was already in via lottery so we've got four people to follow come October. Click here for the full Honu results.

If I recall, this past year, the Ironman was the same day as the Hogsback 12-Hour Race. Some people will do anything to avoid 12 hours of fun on Hogsback!

Other H.U.R.T. friends participating at Honu were Kelly Hupp, Mike Bennett, Cliff Rigsby, Carol Jaxon, and probably lot's of others I am forgetting. Great job to all of you!!!

Finally, don't forget the next trail series race, July 2, the Firecracker 10-mile race at Kaena Point.
