Vi's Top of Tantalus 7 miler - Trail Series Race #2 - Saturday April 11th @ 8am

Aloha Athletes

Vi's Top of Tantalus is sold out but we are looking forward to seeing everyone who has signed up for race #2 of our HURT trail series.

The race run will start and finish at the Pu'u Ualakaa Park, about two miles up Tantalus Mountain on Round Top Drive. This race is conducted in memory of our dear HURT friend, Vi Medusky-Jones, who passed away from ALS three years ago.

According to our permit from the Division of State Parks, we are required to leave parking spaces open to other park users. Please park out on Round Top Drive, outside the entrance to the park, making sure your car is completely off the roadway. Carpooling to the race is highly encouraged. The race will start at the covered lookout, past the bathrooms, and finish in the upper parking lot. The route will be marked with our ribbons, which will be explained race morning when you check in. There will be one aid station near the moleka road crossing, and light refreshments at the finish. The course is rugged and hot, and we urge you to carry a water bottle...our aid stations are only to supplement your water needs. This is a State Park, so alcohol is not permitted. If you have to drop out, it is mandatory for you to inform one of the race directors at the start-finish, before the race is over.

We all look forward to seeing you, and spending another raucous morning on the trails!

Aiea Loop Express - Race Results

Aloha Athletes! Evelyn

Yesterday kicked off the start of our trail series with the sold out Aiea Loop Express. Starting before dawn, runners began to arrive wearing their finest shades of green to celebrate the St. Patty’s day theme. Most of the volunteers were clad in their finest winter attire braving the dare I say freezing temps of the morning, but overall we were blessed with a beautiful day of sunshine. The runners didn't have any rain to contend with this year but a few of the faster folks in front did end up doing a few extra laps around the loop. They took it all with great stride.

A huge mahalo to race director Mike as well as his lovely wife Brenda. From the decorations to the mustaches to the tattoos, Irish themed treats and living prizes, and copious amounts of mouthwatering food at the race finish, they, with the help of a huge team of volunteers, pulled off everything without a hitch. A highlight of the race was Andy Grandinetti out on course, for the second year in a row, playing his bagpipes as runners went by! Special thanks to John and PJ for doing an amazing timing job. I may just have to hire Mike to cook some more of that amazing brisket for my race later in May! Andy

Results can be viewed here:   Aiea Loop Express 2015

Most importantly, it's important to remember that none of the races in our trail series could possibly happen without all the work completed behind the scenes by the race volunteers. A warm aloha to the army of H.U.R.T. volunteers and everyone who took part in organizing, cleaning, and course directing. None of this can happen without you.

Don’t forget to sign up for the next race in the series, Vi’s Top of Tantalus on April 11th. As of this posting there are 60 slots still available.

A hui ho,

Saturday March 14th: Aiea Loop Express @ 7am

Aloha Athletes! 6a00d83451d2fd69e201a3fcd71803970b

This weekend is the start of the 2015 H.U.R.T. trail series and we're kicking it off with the Aiea Loop Express 7(ish) miler.  Prizes will be given for the top 10 men and women and for the best costume. Huge thanks to the RD’s Mike & Randy… last year was the first time we held this race and it was a runaway success - complete with bagpipes!! I for one can’t wait to see what they have in store for us this weekend.

Just a reminder that the trail series races are no longer show-up-and-sign-up and Aiea Loop is sold out. There will be no race day registration available.

After the race, there will be a spread of the usual race munchies to eat. During the race, there will be NO aid stations. Make sure to bring any water or food that you will need for yourself during the run.

The gate to the park will open at 6 am. Bathrooms are available at both the top and bottom parking lots. Race start is at 7am and race number assignment is at 06:30. Please arrive early enough to park & bring your stuff up to the start & sign-in.

Parking is extremely limited so please try to carpool. All runners will need to park in the upper parking and walk down to the start in the lower parking lot.

Directions:  Follow H-1 to Moanalua Highway (Route 78). Take the ‘Aiea cutoff to the third traffic light, make a right turn at ‘Aiea Heights Drive and follow it about 3 miles up to the end of the road. Continue on the one-way park road to the trailhead. (more info)

As for the course, it is 7 miles of rolling hills. We'll be starting from the bottom parking lot and proceeding counter-clockwise around Aiea Loop. Sorry, there is no course map so be prepared to follow the course markings. As always, BLUE is BAD! So do not go that direction. Bad section & hazards will be clearly marked with blue ribbons.

Most important of's pre-St. Pattys day weekend, so please be sure to wear your GREEN! Funny hats, leprechaun attire, shamrocks, and face paint encouraged.

See you Saturday!

H.U.R.T. 2015 Trail Series is now open for registration!

Aloha Athletes,

Sign up for the 2015 H.U.R.T. Trail Series is now open. We welcome our new Race Directors Arvel & Benita who will be taking care of us at the Kaena Point Firecracker run; Steve V. who will jump in as co-director with me for Run with a View; as well as a migration for Julie and Jeff who have moved over to directing Triple Trek with Fish. Big thanks to Sue and Heather for all the years of service they have provided as RD's for the TTT, we will miss you!

Marian and I are stepping in to help John & PJ manage and oversee the Trail Series. We have some very large shoes to fill left vacant by the departure of our beloved Cheryl. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in 2015! But first up, that little race in January...

Important - We are no longer offering the option to sign up for all races at once, so please sign up for each race individually in order to secure a coveted slot.
